Wouter Keijser

Dr. Wouter A. Keijser MD (male) is associate senior researcher and lecturer at University of Twente. After his medical education in the Netherlands (Nijmegen and Amsterdam), research assignments in cardiovascular medicine at Mayo Clinic (USA), and University of Calgary (CAN), and clinical work in family practice, Dr. Keijser’s career focused on healthcare innovation.

Wouter was involved in the development of the first generation of e-health enterprises and various national (e-health) patient empowerment initiatives. Trained by the US Department of Defense and AHRQ, as Europe’s first TeamSTEPPS® MasterTrainer he aided establishing novel interdisciplinary teamwork approach in healthcare, combined with medical leadership practices, for which he functioned as lead researcher to the development of the National Medical Leadership Competency Framework (2015). Wouter participates as independent reviewer for various European Union funded international (research) consortia and operated as member of management teams of several large-scale European programs, including: BeyondSilos; CareWell; and SmartCare. Within these settings he coordinated international research programs on determinants of effective implementation of e-health enabled regional integrated care programs for chronic disease and frail elderly.

Dr. Keijser received his PhD in 2019, upon successfully (suma cum laude) defending his thesis ‘Opening Up Medicine’, based on healthcare transformation related research. Crosspollinating various academic fields and theoretical domains, Wouter’s work contributed to the foundation of the DIRMI Institute (2018) and the School of Regional Healthcare Transformation (2021), he has (co-)founded as spin offs of the University of Twente. Wouter lives and works in and from the Netherlands, where he is engaged in governance work for organizations in health- and social care.
